February 2013

Premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s SOMBRE for bass flute, baritone, harp, percussion and contrabass
February 23 and 24 at the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas
This amazing piece was inspired by the chapel itself and by three of Ezra Pound’s late Cantos, for example this from CXX:

I have tried to write Paradise

Let the Gods forgive what I
have made
Let those I try to forgive
what I have made

(Before this, a flute master class and a composers class at UNM in Albuquerque, NM on the 15th and 19th, and a flute master class at Rice University in Houston on the 20th. )
