Only the Sound Remains
More than an opera, Only the sound remains is an encounter between Japanese Noh drama and contemporary theatre. With this diptych based on two traditional plays, Tsunemasa and Hagoromo, Kaija Saariaho orchestrates a translation and dialogue between cultures, drawing on the deep interest in Japanese culture, instruments and playing techniques that she has cultivated for almost forty years.
